The University of Arizona’s Gamma Phi Beta chapter last month conducted its second annual Crescent Crush, a high-energy, philanthropic competition to raise funds for Girls on the Run, an organization that empowers young girls through running-based programs.
The competition featured 14 male participants, including freshman Vinny Pizzi, all competing for the prized Crescent Crush title.
The week began with Moonball, Gamma Phi Beta’s annual philanthropy event, and was followed by unique fundraisers including a carnation flower sale on the chapter’s front lawn and a “pie a contestant” event, where contestants get pies thrown at their faces.
But one of the most popular events was the high heel race, in which the competitors ran along a stretch of Second Street wearing heels while being cheered on by the girls.
“Running in heels was definitely harder than I thought. It gave me a whole new level of respect for girls,” said Pizzi. “But it was super fun. Everyone was having fun for a good cause.”
“I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into it,” Pizzi said. “But once I saw how passionate the girls were about the event and the cause, I was all in. It was such a fun way to give back.”

The competition concluded with a talent show, during which contestants sang, danced and performed comedy routines.
By week’s end, Arizona’s Gamma Phi Beta raised $20,000 for Girls on the Run.
Crescent Crush winners earn more than just bragging rights, they are welcomed into the Gamma Phi Beta house with open arms. From getting the house code and joining the women of the sorority for meals and hangouts, they become honorary members of the sisterhood for the rest of the year.
“It felt great knowing we were doing something that could have a real impact,” Pizzi said.”I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
Sophomore Hallie Shepard, Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropy chairwoman, said she was pleased with how Crescent Crush Week turned out.
“It was amazing to see 14 young men come together to support a cause we care so much about,” she said. “The energy all week was so positive, and I’m really happy with how everything came together.”
Pizzi did not win but he had a great time giving back to the community and Gamma Phi Beta.
