Most families who have lost a loved one while serving in the line of duty receive some type of financial support, but what about Border Patrol agents?

Border Patrol wives came together to make sure the families of the fallen agents receive the support they need.

The Tucson community showed up to show their support for the second annual memorial 5k race.

You could run, walk or ruck. Some even carried a backpack weighing about 38 pounds to simulate what agents have as their gear.

Kelly Meshirer and Holly Schadt started the race because they felt their wasn’t anything for the Border Patrol community.

James and Kyle, who are BORSTAR agents, ran the entire race carrying a dummy symbolizing fallen agents.

“It shows a lot of camaraderie within the Patrol,” James said.

The wives said that last year they raised over $16,000 for the families who have lost loved ones.

Meshirer said this year the money will go toward the National Border Patrol Foundation and specifically back into the Tucson Border Patrol Sector, which includes Southern Arizona.

“The Border Patrol Foundation has agreed to funnel the contribution that we give them back into our community, so they’ve earmarked the funds to go back to Border Patrol families in need,” Meshirer said.

Sean Mendoza participated in the race and came in 1st place. He says he will continue to look forward to the race every year.

The wives said they are looking forward to many more years to come, and to be able to have the opportunity to remember the 119 agents that have been lost while serving in the line of duty.
