Amid questions about the base’s future with the likelihood that the A-10 attack aircraft will be eliminated, Tucson’s Davis-Monthan Air Force Base released a report indicating that the base’s regional economic impact in the 2013 fiscal year was about $973 million, down from $1.14 billion in fiscal 2012.
The report’s estimate of overall local economic impact, including spending by Air Force retirees living in the region, was $1.47 billion, down from $1.63 billion. Of the 7,526 military personnel who work at Davis-Monthan, 75 percent live off-base. The Air Force estimate on economic impact does not factor in the costs to the region of providing municipal services, including schools, to those military residents living off-base.
There are about 2,900 civilian workers employed at the base.
The declines in economic impact between the 2012 and 2013 fiscal years are attributed to reductions in Air Force operations during that period.
